IndyCar in Review–Who’s at the Top of the Heap?

Reflections on the 2016 IndyCar Season include many retrospective and introspective looks at the highlights, and one that many people look forward to is the annual Motorsport.com ranking of the sport’s top performers. Their panel of six seasoned media specialists–three stateside, three from the across the pond–took a look at not only the statistics, but the overall performance of the series’ individual competitors.

The panel’s conclusion is that Team Penske drivers dominated the sport in 2016, with series Champion, Simon Pagenaud, rightly earning his spot at the top. Pagenaud’s five wins, eight poles, and average starting/finishing position combination of 3.9/6.1 outdistanced the field of 35 IndyCar competitors with teammate Will Power (four wins, one pole. and a 5.7/7.9 position average) a close runner-up.Team Penske’s third marquee driver, Helio Castroneves, placed sixth in Motorsport’s rankings.

In summary, the top 10 as determined by Morotsport.com analysts looks like this:

  1. Simon Pagenaud
  2. Will Power
  3. Josef Newgarden
  4. Scott Dixon
  5. Graham Rahal
  6. Helio Castroneves
  7. Tony Kanaan
  8. Ryan Hunter-Reay
  9. James Hinchcliffe
  10. Alexander Rossi

Motorsport.com also awarded honorable mentions to Conor Daly, Sebastien Bourdais (1 win), and Juan Pablo Montoya (1 win). Montoya has announced his retirement from full-time racing.

Conversely, the final points standings for the series looks like this:
