Star Story – Queen Latifah
Birthday: March 18, 1970
Birthplace: Newark, New Jersey
Remember how much talent and comedic flair Queen Latifah brought to her role in Valentine’s Day? She always brings it. This queen of hip-hop shines in serious roles, too, as evidenced by her performance in the 2008 drama The Secret Life of Bees. She received an Academy Award nomination for 2002’s Chicago.
The former high school basketball star and burger chain employee was still a teen when word of her talent got around. Tommy Boy Records released her first album, All Hail the Queen, in 1989.
Queen Latifah has gathered both success and accolades in every field of endeavor she’s entered. The first rap artist to be honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, she has earned—in addition to her Oscar nom—a Grammy for best solo rap performance; a Golden Globe; and a slew of other awards and nominations.
There are also lots of production credits on Latifah’s resume: Her production company, Flavor Unit, collaborated with Fox Searchlight on the film Just Wright, in which she plays a physical therapist who works with an NBA star. Of her costar, Common, Queen Latifah says, “You couldn’t ask to work with a kinder, more beautiful person.” For his part, Common says Latifah has a lot of “great things about her.” We couldn’t agree more.
