Star Story – Rachel McAdams

Birthday: November 17, 1978

Birthplace: London, Ontario, Canada

As a child Rachel McAdams got used to the spotlight as a competitive skater in Canada. Although she began to act as a young teen at a summer theater camp, McAdams likely would not have majored in theater in college were it not for a teacher who encouraged her to audition to be a drama major. She went on to graduate from York University in Toronto, earning a bachelor of fine arts degree, with honors, in theater.

After appearing in a few movies and TV series, McAdams landed a part in 2004’s Mean Girls and gained the notice of industry people. On the heels of its release came The Notebook, cementing her growing reputation as a versatile young leading lady.

She starred with Cillian Murphy in the 2005 thriller Red Eye. Trading in her romantic lead persona, McAdams played a woman who fights for her life, refusing to be victimized by a terrorist. Her film repertoire now includes serious drama (The Time Traveler’s Wife; Southpaw); lighthearted comedy and drama (Morning Glory; Midnight in Paris); and action-adventure (the Sherlock Holmes films).

For a star whose earnings now figure in the millions, McAdams reports no trouble with unruly fans. She once told an interviewer that people don’t recognize her because of her hair color. “I change it all the time,” she said. But the Academy recognizes her: Rachel McAdams received her first Oscar nomination for 2015’s Spotlight.
