Bollywood Dance: Cardio with a Twist
What’s new in dance and exercise?
We’ve all heard of Zumba- the high-intensity fast-paced cardio dance class offered nearly in every gym and dance studio recently. The new Zumba? Bollywood!
What does its name mean?
Bollywood combines two names, Bombay (now Mumbai) and Hollywood. Bollywood films, produced in Mumbai, India, have influenced an entire genre of dance associated with the industry.
What kind of dance is it?
Moves are derived from traditional Indian dance and classic jazz moves. Just like Zumba, Bollywood is a high intensity cardio, with a stronger background in traditional Bollywood dance. Sessions usually run one hour in length.
Who should do it?
If you’re sick of doing the same combinations in Zumba or want to try something new, this is for you! A medium fitness level is suggested (being active at least once a week), as it raises your heart rate significantly. No background in Indian dance is necessary- just like Zumba, you just jump in and try it out!
Where can I do it?
More and more dance studios and fitness clubs are offering it- check your local gym or dance studio.
What should I wear to class?
Most fitness clothes are acceptable. Anything you feel comfortable moving in works. My suggestion is sneakers, athletic leggings, a sports tank, and a hair tie. Be sure to bring fresh drinking water and a towel.
Anything else I should know?
As with any new exercise, it’s advisable to check with your healthcare provider before starting a new routine.
