Proverbs 16:9

Have you ever come to a crossroad and wondered what path to take? You look to the right thinking that must be the way, but then, as you gaze over to the road on the left, confusion sets in. Which way to go?

Proverbs 16:9 reminds us that, while we may try to plan all the details of our lives, God actually establishes our steps. Sadly, people wrongly assume that those who have important jobs, great relationships, or healthy bank accounts must be on the right path. The truth is, without God, their so-called blessed existence will not sustain them in the long run (aka eternity). Although we may consider ourselves to be believers, real breakthrough comes when we totally surrender control to Him.

How do we do that?  First, we need to submit to Him and admit our dependence on Him. Psalm 25:12 assures us that God will instruct us in the ways we should choose. Acceptance of that instruction will enable us to trust Him. Then we wait. But waiting doesn’t mean sitting idly by, doing nothing. Instead, we should be praying, since prayer is our direct communication with God. This is the time things can happen; we may hear from Him in the form of an answer, or we may receive direction about our next steps. He may prompt us to continue to wait in Him, or He may direct us to some other action. Regardless, this is the most effective way we receive revelation from God.

The most amazing part of allowing God to guide us is that when we go the wrong way, become lost in a storm, or when we simply run out of gas, He’ll be there to redirect us and sustain us. Right before Jesus went to heaven, He assured us He was sending another Advocate, the Holy Spirit, who would be with us every second of every day of our lives. He is ready, willing and able to guide us, reveal Gods will for us, and remain with us through every choice we have to make in our lives.
